Every year on World Marrow Donor Day, we honour the selfless individuals who donate their bone marrow or stem cells to save lives. This special day raises awareness about the importance of donating marrow and recognises the heroes who give patients with life-threatening diseases like leukaemia and lymphoma a second chance.
Bone marrow transplants are often the only hope for patients in need of a healthy immune system reboot. Yet, finding a compatible donor is challenging, especially for patients with rare genetic backgrounds. That’s why expanding the donor registry is crucial. Every new donor increases the chances of finding a match and saving a life.
Someone who appreciates this fact more than most is STR Group’s Legal and Compliance Advisor Nadine Pullen. Her son, Jack, who has a rare metabolic condition called MPS Hurlers Syndrome, benefitted from a transplant, which has dramatically extended his original life expectancy of just 10 years.
